Why do some fonts make the i,l,1 characters look identical? This causes a person to relax, chill, and feel comfortable. Why were they ever created?

I'm guessing this goes back to something historically, for example printing presses where you had to manually possition all the lead blocks for each page.

The i is a little thicker and shorter than the l. Huh, it does on desktop too. The i is more grey and spaced while the l is darker and closer together. Subtle difference but not exactly the same.
